Rural Residence Bairi: Combining Country Living with Ecological Architecture
architectural design, construction: ΑΙΤΗΡΙΟ|architecture
In a flat village in Dorida, the "Bairi" farm is a true earthly paradise, where Christos and Maria have chosen to live a life that combines the charm of natural living with rural life and the integrated care of the land and its plants.
Every day, we find the couple engaged in a plethora of activities that reflect their dedication to organic farming and sustainable living. From tending to the orchards, adopting traditional cultivation methods, and engaging in small-scale animal husbandry, each of their actions is an opportunity to harmonize with the cycle of nature and seasonal changes.
With a passion for tradition and knowledge, the couple rediscovers past cultivation methods and combines them with modern practices. Instead of relying on pesticides and chemical fertilizers, they choose to use natural plant protection methods and organic soil fertilization, creating products with high nutritional value and authentic taste.
In line with a holistic approach to an alternative way of life, choosing a structural approach based on natural materials for their home construction seemed like the only logical solution, and thus they came into contact with our office AITHRIO|architecture.
The starting point of the design was the existing structure of a wooden frame and a tiled roof. The interior space was designed with comfort and functionality in mind, while the natural lighting, the breathing strawclay walls with their remarkable thermal insulation properties, and the natural ventilation of the house create a natural climate that promotes the well-being of the residents while maintaining a very small energy footprint.
As the family grew, so did their spatial needs. Therefore, they proceeded with an addition to the original construction that is imbued with the same philosophy.
The result of our collaboration showcases nature, aesthetics, and human experience. It is a dialogue with the past and the present, creating a space that reflects the philosophy and values of our office, as well as the needs and desires of its residents.
